Tom Sawyer Company President and CEO Carolyn Sawyer was recently invited to serve as a panelist for the 6th annual Women’s Leadership Institute at the University of South Carolina. The event, held in USC’s Russell House, was hosted by the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Women’s Issues. Over 200 attendees participated in the one day conference on April 29, mainly USC faculty, staff and graduate students.
The title of this year’s program was “Empowered Voices: Strategies of Effective Leaders”. Sawyer lead the group through a stimulating discussion that focused on young women taking on leadership roles, becoming financially independent and taking on the business world. She related tips on starting, growing and maintaining a million dollar business as outlined in her best selling book, “Forget the Glass Slipper, Build Your Own Castle: 10 Traits of a Million Dollar Business”. And she stressed the need for today’s leaders to be talented at managing resources. She illustrated principles that not only were applicable in the work place, but were also effective in the attendees’ personal lives.
After the presentation, Sawyer joined other presenters in break-out sessions with those present. Using her expertise in the realm of business and finances, she led 80 young ladies through a dynamic question and answer session which focused on surviving and thriving in today’s world of business.
Joining Sawyer on the panel were Inez Tennenbaum, the new Director-Elect for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission; Barbara Gelberd, President of the Columbia-based BridgeBuilders, LLC; and Sarita Chourey, a reporter for Morris Newspapers who covers state politics and government. Ms. Hildy Teegen, Dean of USC’s Moore School of Business, was the Luncheon Keynote Speaker.
