The Tom Sawyer Company has been recognized by the National Women President’s Organization (WPO) for the company’s efforts in recycling, energy conservation and emphasis on saving our natural resources. Tom Sawyer Company (TSC) President and CEO Carolyn Sawyer accepted the "Sustainable Purpose Award" from the WPO and Sam's Club, Friday, April 24. The award was given during the keynote address at the organization's annual conference in San Diego.

“Sustainability is TSC's catch phrase for 2009”, according to Sawyer. “Starting a comprehensive company recycling effort is good; keeping it going, making it a part of the every day routine, is great.” Sawyer says the company has learned to run the business through the process of recycling paper, plastic, cans, cardboard, ink and printer cartridges. Employees even use both sides of paper in printers for non-essential documents. The company has worked to reduce power and water bills by turning off lights, unplugging computer monitors and appliances, using florescent lights, and reducing water usage.

TSC's newly created internal "Green Team" trains employees and other clients on how to reduce their carbon footprint at work and home while saving time and money. "The TSC team is working hard to 'reduce, reuse, and recycle' our resources", says Green Team Leader, Emily Bloxdorf. "It's so easy to incorporate these simple habits into our daily lives. The payoff? The Earth is that much greener!”

In honor of Earth Day, TSC added a little more green to the world by providing employees plants, packaged in recycled materials found around the office. Each plant had a "green friendly" tip and served as a reminder of how important it is to keep our planet clean and green.

The WPO is a non-profit membership organization for women presidents of multimillion-dollar companies. Headquartered in New York City, the group has over 80 active chapters with over 1500 members across the U.S. and Canada.
